The Art of the Sketchbook

The Art of the Sketchbook

The three sketches below are all dated 2001 from the same 12" x 9" hardbound sketchbook.

I used sepia color watercolor in this sketchbook attempting to sketch a person. I wrote, "3 value silhouette ... Value change gives illusion of depth"   I didn't over try like I can usually manage to do.  It was a woman with long hair, she uses her hand to cover part of her face and I just caught part of her shoulder.

Here I was trying to sketch some eyes.  Kinda spooky looking and the glasses are goofy with the furthest glass rim larger than the front one.  I'm thinking the sketchbook is a great place to practice eyes as well as sketching people .... don't you?

  1. I keep saying this but I learn so much from your sketch books. This week I noticed the notes...I don't put notes in mine...just the date. I will start to write more notes. I have been sketching almost every day now and I can already see an improvement in my work. Love this series!

  2. Thanks so much Maria. I don't always add note. I wish I would ... they make the sketch mean more when you go to look at your sketchbooks later.

  3. Your sketches give a wonderful glimpse into your world and what you see. I find other people's sketchbooks fascinating and have my own, of course, where I work out ideas and colours sometimes. Sketchbooks capture history for the future.
