Almost Home ~ oil 9" x 12"
I'm calling this one done, I'm also calling this one a 'study'. I've been wanting to paint this snow scene for a while now but on a larger format perhaps a 24" x 36" canvas. This one is 9" x 12" and large for me considering most of my oils have been 8" x 10" or smaller. I started out by doing a few value studies (below), just thinking of where I wanted to go with this one. I know it helped to do the studies in marker and the Bic pen because I was mentally prepared going in and now I think I will feel much more confident going into the large painting.
Value studies from my sketch book. On the left I used a sepia Bic pen and on the right a black Sharpie and a cool grey Prismacolor marker.
Below a little collection of heart shaped rocks I've collected, to tell you Happy Valentines day.... Yeah I know I'm early, but I'm going to spend my Valentines day getting my teeth cleaned and saying hello to my dentist.

This is excellent Nancy! I love the patches of light across the snow...
Beautiful job on the snow, Nancy! I agree with Brad -- love those patches of light. You should feel very proud!
I love the "Study" very much. I like the way the path curves and brings you along. I just want to know what is around that curve. I also love that you explain your process and show sketches. It is an invaluable lesson for me. Thanks so much!
This is beautiful, Nancy! I love the rich darks and cool blue shadows on snow are my favourite winter colours! And there is a sense of story in this painting, with the curving road, which adds so much interest!
Happy Valentines Day to my west coast blogger-friend!
Love your painting - you have really took well to oils!
Fabulous Nancy! Great composition, gorgeous values and those gorgeous streaks of light! Love love love!
I love your little sketches throughout your blog posts. They are great reminders to work things out before taking brush to canvas. Great snow too.
Hi Nancy,
This is a beautiful painting, even though you're calling it a study, it's a wonderful painting on it's own. It'll be beautiful as a larger painting. Only one thing left to do . . . . jump in with both feet and see where that large canvas takes you!
Lovely shells too.
Thanks for the nice comments on my blog,
Joan
Beautiful!!! I bet going to a large canvas will be easier than you thought. Looking forward to the larger piece.
I love working small and doing studies, but I am also trying to start some larger paintings from smaller ones, either done outside plein air or inside from photos. This is beautiful and thanks for sharing!
Did you use a photo reference for this? It is so good! Love the warm and cool---Bravo!!
Thank you for your lovely comment and for finding my blog, Nancy. In turn, I was able to find this blog. Your work is so beautiful! There is a softness to it that is just so lovely and warm. At the same time it is clean and gorgeous. What a combination!
This is a beautiful painting, as is, and will be a gorgeous large piece - wonderful!
