Belle

Belle Belle, 6" x 6" oil

After working on Belle a little more, I've finally decided this painting is as finished as she will ever be. The painting isn't perfect, yet I see the resemblance in her face. I think I've learned a lot by attempting to paint an animal in oil, but I'm ready to move on.

  4. A wise person said to me once, "You don't have to be perfect to be wonderful!" and I think that's true of this painting. The face is so expressive that whatever it is that you may see as not perfect isn't even seen by the viewer since it's the face that just draws you in! Beautiful work! I would imagine it would be hard rendering a black dog in oil, trying to get values other than dark and darker!

  7. Thank you Kathryn for stopping by.

Thank you Lin. My daughter comes this week-end. She will be the true test since it's her baby.

Ronell, thank you so much for your kind words. I found Belle fun to paint.

Jana, I need to remember those words. And just what is perfect anyway? do I really want perfection?

Thanks Toni. I had a lot of trouble with the eyes I think. I know you do the eyes of birds all the time ... that must be a challenge also.

Thank you Mary. Belle does have a lovely spirit and expression. I'm so glad you can see it in this painting.

  8. Beautiful work, Nancy! You really have captured something individual here - it's not just a generic pet portrait. I love the texture of her coat, and that expression...I think I'd recognize her among others.

  10. WOW what a wonderful creature. She is such a good dog you can see it in her expression. Don't you LOVE her? :) (She's mine, mine, mine, you can't have her!!!) It really did turn out beautiful. It is definitely her. It's on my table by my couch (upstairs) with my picture of Grandma Sadie and my angel holding Cameron as a baby. Thanks!
